Hema Sintersizer

The Sintersizer is a giant music machine for 'Sinterklaas' made out of life size and regular size Hema products. To goal of this installation was to allow children to create their own 'Sinterklaas' song.

This could be done by choosing one of four musical styles and fill the track with additional elements and sounds.

My roll was the design, development and install of all interactive and lighting elements.

Multiple elements were transformed into light objects by placing controllable LED's inside of behind. For example: transparent hair styling gel containers and drinking bottles.

A total of 56 elements were turned into buttons. These signals were turned into MIDI messages that drove a custom piece of software which set up the different stages of the music making progress. 

The custom software linked the audio and lighting together. Either to show different steps in the process or to visualise the sounds as a VU meter.
